Have We Forgotten?

Yesterday was the seventh anniversary of 9/11 and both Presidential canditates, McCain and Obama, were present at ground zero for the memorial ceremony. Last night as I was watching a documentary on the September 11 attacks, so many feeling came rushing back to me as the images of that day were shown on the tv. Feelings of confusion, fear, anger, and sorrow for all of those who lost loved ones.

During the documentary, a cameraman was able to capture people in Time Square who were watching everything unfold on the Good Morning America Screen. It was interesting to see how mad they were and how they wanted to "kill those who were behind this," with others saying, "we need to go to war and fight back!" I couldn't help but wonder what both McCain and Obama were thinking as they stood at ground zero yesterday while the names of those who died were being read. Did McCain wonder if we had made the right decision to go to war? Did Obama re-think his plan to pull troops out of Iraq? It seems we have forgotten why we are war, or at least we forget until the anniversary comes up each year.

This post is special to me as I never forget.

My husband is a firefighter and each and every morning that he leaves for his shift, he leaves me a love note. Maybe one tragic day he won't come home. The firefighters that went to the World Trade Center on 9-11-01 had no intention of not coming home. They did what they do lots of other days, they went to save lives and in return lost theirs. 343 firefighters/paramedics.

One thing I have always found interesting is that when this happened, the entire nation was angry with George Bush that we didn't go to war sooner. Like President Bush, or hate him, at the time people wanted to rush right in and envoke the same sort of distruction upon those responsible as occurred here. I think it's interesting at the shift in the nation's thinking now that most people are completely dissatisfied with Bush's leadership and are demanding the removal of troops. I can't really say which side I would advocate, as I certainly do not think President Bush has been perfect in his decisions, and I am by no means a staunch Republican, but I clearly remember the outcry from the public when September 11th initially happened.
